1st Indianapolis 500 Winner
Ray Harroun won the inaugural Indy 500 on May 29, 1911.  This 500-mile race purse held over $27k, of which Harroun was awarded $14,000 plus a bonus from the Marmon company. The yellow & black single-bucket race car, the Marmon “Wasp”, was the first to boast a rear view mirror.  Harroun is given credit for its invention.  Interesting to note, $27k in 1911 would be the equivalent to approximately $660,000 in 2012.
